Do We Have Any Options To Get The Money Back That We Returned To Social Security?
My son was under 18 when I retired. We were holding the social security money we received for him for a car or in the event he was ever able to go to a trade school or college (he is special needs) and we used our money for his expenses. When he turned 18 Social Security asked for any unspent funds back because our son could now receive the money directly (which he is unable to manage). We thought they were issuing a check right back to him for the $17.000 we returned and we were going to have him sign it back over to us. They never refunded the money and never responded to our . . . Read More

Should I Choose My Birth Month Or The Month After That To Get My Maximum Rate?
I am filling out the application to claim my social security retirement benefit application and having difficulty finding answer one item on it. BENEFIT STARTING DATE. I will turn 70 in June, 2021. Should I put down June, 2021 as my benefit starting date or July, 2021. I waited to claim the benefit until I am 70 years old, so I do not want to end up with the benefit for 69 year and 11 months old. Am I entitled full maximum benefit on my birthday month or the month after? I searched all sorts of publications by SSA but could not find anything clear on it. Help!

Would Collecting Benefits From My Deceased Ex-Husband's Record At Age 62 Reduce My Lifetime Benefit When I Switch To My Own Record At Age 70?
Hello. I'm currently 60, retired but working part-time.. I'm thinking of applying for my deceased ex-spouse's benefit at 62 (at which time I do not plan on working my part-time job) and then switching to my own record at 70. Will taking my deceased ex-husband's benefit at 62 reduce my lifetime benefit amount when I switch to my own record at 70? Thanks.
Hi,
No, collecting surviving divorced spousal benefits would have no adverse effect on your own benefits in the future. Furthermore, if your own benefit rate will be higher than your survivor rate, it . . . Read More

Why Wouldn't My Friend Qualify For Benefits From Her Ex-Husband's Social Security?
Hi Larry
I am asking this question for an elderly friend who is 78 years old. She has been divorced for many years. She has been collecting social security of her own record being 1200.00 per month. Too little to live on. Her ex husband made much more than her in their over 20 yr marriage. She has been told she does not qualify for her ex husbands social security. Why would she not qualify? and if she does how to go about it?
Thanks for any help or advice you can give.

Hi,
No, at least not as far as Social Security law is concerned. You'd probably have ask a lawyer whether or not you could claim any of your husband's settlement by other means.

Why Would I Need To Provide This Information?
I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in 2015 and by 2016 it metastasized and I had to apply for long term disability (a company benefit), After eight months of Chemo the tumor began to shrink and It was removed and in Feb 2019 I went back to work part time. By 2020 working became too muck for and I had to retire. I retired effective June 30th 2020, and due to my 23 years of service my company gave me severance pay dated July 1, 2020. I later received a letter form the insurance company informing me that they need to confirm my earnings June 1, 2020 to July 1, 2020. If I stopped . . . Read More

Is The Reduction In My Wife's Benefit Due To GPO Correct?
My wife collects social security. A little from her w2 earnings and more from her half of my social security. When her payments started, they were reduced by about $30 per month due to GPO. She worked for about 10 years for the local school district in s part time job. They had a savings plan and my wife contributed about $4000 to it and the school district contributed about $1000. So in less than 3 years, the GPO will eat up all the school districts contribution and in less than 14 years, it would eat up both the schools contribution and my wife’s contribution. In 14 years, . . . Read More

Do I Have To Wait Until My Full Retirement Age (FRA) To File For My Deceased Husband's Benefits Without A Penalty?
I will be 65 in June of 2021. I am still working full time and hope to keep working until 67. My husband passed away in 2017 at 69. He was collecting his SS at a reduced rate when he was 64.
I plan to file for widows benefits as soon as i can without a penalty. Do i have to wait until i am 66 4 months to file for my deceased husbands benefits without a penalty or can i apply earlier at 65? I will be switching to my benefits at 70.
Thank you!

Am I At Risk Of Losing Benefits?
I'm 69. I started applying for Social Security retirement benefits online, but then stopped because I ran in to some questions that I need help with. I never completed the application process nor signed the form. When I called the SS office for help, they said that I started my application process 7 months ago and that it needed to be completed within 6 months. They made this sound like this wasn't a good situation for me. They scheduled me for the next available meeting with one of the SS representative, but this will be 2 months from now. I am worried. Am I at risk of . . . Read More
