Hi,

Unless you have a child in your care who's eligible for benefits on your husband's record, the earliest that you could potentially qualify for spousal benefits is at age 62 (https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.03/handbook-0305.html). Being disabled doesn't have any bearing on . . . Read More

Is It True That My Friend Can't Receive Any Of Her Deceased Husband's Benefits?

Larry,
I am asking for my friend, Robin. She lived in NV when her husband passed away, a year ago. She now resides in Kansas. She is 64y/o and was told she could NOT receive any of her husband’s benefits until she was 66y/o. Is that true and if so Why?
Thank You,
Melanie

Hi Melanie,

I don't enough information to know if what your friend was told is correct or not. A person can potentially be eligible for widow's benefits as early as age 60, so your friend meets the age requirement. The only reason I can think of why she might be . . . Read More

Do I Get Half Of My Husband's Benefit Amount?

My husband is 72 he just started collecting his ss benefit he collects 3200 month before Medicare I started collecting my benefits last November when I turned 62 due to health reasons my benefit is 1309 month do I get half his as spousal benefits or is this it

Hi,

No, you won't get half of your husband's benefit amount. Unreduced spousal benefits are calculated at 50% of the worker's primary insurance amount (PIA), not 50% of their age 70 rate. A person's PIA is equal to the amount of their Social Security retirement benefit if they start drawing at . . . Read More

Can I Retire On My Ex's Social Security?

I'm five years older than my ex husband, who makes nearly three times what I make in income. I turn 65 next week. If i retire at 66, he'll be 61, can I retire on his? If not, and I retire on mine, can I change to his when he turns 66?

Hi,

You can't qualify for divorced spousal benefits until your ex-spouse is either a) drawing his benefits, or b) is at least age 62 and your divorce has been final for at least 2 years. You couldn't start out drawing your own benefits and then switch drawing just a divorced spousal benefit, but what you could do is . . . Read More

Were Spousal Benefits Eliminated In 2016?

When I went to the ssa office to apply for spousal benefits I was told that was eliminated in 2016, so I applied for benefits on my own record when I turned 66. Did the spousal benefit get eliminated or was I given bad info. My husband started benefits at his full retirement age of 66. I tried to get spousal benefit when I was 64

Hi,

Spousal benefits haven't been eliminated. What changed in 2016 is that people born after January 1 1954 can no longer file for spousal benefits without also being required to file for their own benefits at the same time . . . Read More

Do I Need To Do Something Before My 66th Birthday?

URGENT ATTN REQUESTED.Today is July 30,2020. I am 65 and my birthday is Aug 2. Are there things that I need to do concerning benefits and financial deadlines, prior to my 66 birthday?

Hi,

I don't know enough about your circumstances to give you an answer. You wouldn't necessarily have to do anything with regard to Social Security benefits simply because you're turning age 66, but there may be filing strategies that you should consider if you haven't yet filed. You may want to consider using our software to analyze your options.

Will I Get A Raise When I Turn 65?

I have been getting Social Security and Medicare since 2000 because of ESRD (kidney disease) i'll be 65 in December 2020. Am i eligible for any upgrade/raise because i'm turning 65?

Hi,

Turning 65 wouldn't have any effect on your Social Security disability benefit rate, and your Medicare premium amount won't change unless you've been paying a higher than standard premium rate due to a late enrollment.

Best, Jerry
