How Do We Go About Getting Benefits For Our Grandson?

Hi Larry, I’m retiring at the end of July. My questions is how do file for my grandson social security benefits when I retire? We meet the three requirements: under 18, not in school( something about school age), he’s only 4. Lastly, he more than 50% dependent on my income.
Several people have told me this is possible but nobody know how to get the benefits started. My ex wife already receive SSI payments because of her disability. My daughter takes care of my ex wife along with my grandson. Both depends on my income. Do I contact my local Social Security office first? I . . . Read More

Hi. If you were married to your husband for at least 10 years and if you've been divorced for at least 2 years or if your ex-spouse is collecting Social Security retirement or disability benefits, then you may be able to qualify for divorced spousal benefits if you are at least age 62. You can't qualify for divorced spousal benefits on the account of a living ex-spouse prior to age 62 even if you are disabled ( . . . Read More

How Do I Get My Disability Benefits Reinstated?

My ssi disability was I guess terminated when Trump came into office. I just went along with it didn't do anything about it . I was diagnosed like %90 disabled by the state doctor I believed. My question is do I have to refile all over or do I go through my attorney I had at the time when I applied for ssi disability? Or would I still be on file and have a case # or something? Times are getting tougher out here and I don't work I can't really. Also if I get accepted once again would I get back time of not receiving all those years with out my ssi disability?

Do The Online Social Security Benefit Estimates Reflect The 2022 COLA?

Hi Larry I have a question regarding the cola adjustments for 2022 and potentially 2023. I'm 64 and retiring end of September. I'm planning to take social security April 2023. I have not started the filing process yet.
My questions: the estimated benefits I see on my online ss account, do they reflect the 2022 cola already added or is the 2022 cola added to my estimated benefits when I file next year? And what about the 2023 cola if there is one? I'm trying to figure out if the cola's are already reflected in my estimated benefits or if they will be added when I do file. . . . Read More

Is It Correct That I Won't Receive My Full Age 70 Rate Until January 2023?

I filed for my retirement benefits yesterday by phone to start in September at age 70. The representative told me that my initial benefit amount would be the same amount as if I had filed to start in January 2022. The representative indicated that my full age 70 benefits would then start in January 2023. This is contrary to what I have read in this column that I should receive my full age 70 benefit as of my first check. Is this yet another change due to Covid-19? Thank you

Hi. No. If you reach age 70 in September and if you claim your benefits effective . . . Read More

WIll My Deceased Husband's First Wife Get His Social Security?

My husband is decease. I'm his 2ns wife would his 1st wife get his social security?

Hi. I'm sorry for your loss. Your husband's first wife could potentially qualify for survivor benefits on his account if she meets the requirements (https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.04/handbook-0403.html), but even if she does it would have no effect on your eligibility for survivor benefits. As long as you meet the requirements for widow's benefits ( . . . Read More

Would I Be Eligible For Spousal Benefits?

Good evening Larry I am 67 I started my disability ss at age 60 I have been married two years my social security is 884 an let’s say his is 1200.00 what would I get in spousal benefits? Thanks in advance

Hi. It doesn't sound like it. A person's full Social Security disability (SSDI) benefit amount is equal to their primary insurance amount (PIA), and your PIA would have to be less than half as much as your husband's PIA in order for you to be eligible for spousal benefits. Based on the amounts listed in your question your PIA is apparently more than half . . . Read More

Can You Suggest A Financial Planner Who Can Assist Me With A WEP Appeal?

Hoping someone can suggest a financial planner regarding a WEP situation.
There seems to be an exception for Australia pension receivers mentioned here:
https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0200307290
Looking for a planner who can verify that, and assist in an appeal as payment was reduced recently.
This seems to be a sort of a "dusty corner" in the WEP legalese, so seeking a pro.

Hi. I don't know of anyone who specializes in your specific issue. Here's what I . . . Read More

Does My PIA Increase By The Same Annual Inflation Adjustments Whether I'm Collecting Or Not?

I’m 68, single never married, retired at 66, and have delayed taking Social Security benefits to maximize my Delayed Retirement Credits. I had planned to delay until age 70. However, as I see the large percentage increases in SS benefits due to inflation, I would like to know if I am missing out by continuing to delay. Does the primary insurance amount (PIA) increase with annual inflation adjustments by the same amount whether I am collecting or delaying? Thank you.

Hi. Yes. You do not need to start drawing benefits sooner than you had planned in order to . . . Read More

Can Social Security Legally Require Me To Pay Back More After Telling Me That My Overpayment Balance Was Zero?

Hi Larry you answered my question earlier thus week. Great job, and TY. Guess what I paid my overpayment off in 2019, and have two letters showing they reduced my balance. Now 3 years later they came back with half after stating my bill is paid in full!! I paid them my reduced amount every month for like 2 years. See, this proves I am STILL sick as my more is not good. I don't even know how I could ever forget about it! Can they legally after reviewing my account years ago and setting up a payment arrangement for the balance then giving me a payment in full letter for this? 0 . . . Read More
