Hi. The earliest that you could be eligible for spousal benefits on your current husband's account is effective with the first month he starts drawing his Social Security retirement or disability benefits (https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook . . . Read More

Can I Delay The Automatic Conversion From Disability To Retirement Benefits That Occurs At Full Retirement Age?
In May (deadline to avoid losing any disability benefits) I began the process of applying for SS disability (not SSI) effective on a disability date of 12/2020.
When I reach full retirement age (which will be before my disability claim is approved) in about Aug 2022 I don't want automatic conversion if my SS disability is approved but want to wait until 70 to collect regular retirement benefits.
I am divorced but may remarry to another later after I reach 70- currently age 66.
I see your answer below but cannot find any support for this and SSA will not . . . Read More

Will The Fact That I Was Incorrectly Paid Spousal Benefits Affect My Own Retirement Benefits?
I was collecting spousal benefit since May 2020. Hubby is still here! Was saving it towards retiring. I was working full time.
I am 68 and applied for my own retirement May 3 2022. Waiting to get my award letter and called after 3 weeks. I was told I wasn’t supposed to be getting spousal benefit and have to pay it back! Evidently if you’re born after January 1954 it doesn’t apply. And I’m born in april 1954. I have no idea why it went through. All I knew was it was approved and they were paying me. I’m very upset about this and if I have to pay back fine however I want to . . . Read More

Do My Railroad Credits Get Rolled Into Social Security?
Hi Larry, I’m 60 right now, and I’ve been thinking about taking SS at 63, my Full retirement age is 67. Now for the question, I worked for the rail road for 13 years and was vested, does that somehow get rolled into SS when it’s time to apply? Or do I need to file for railroad retirement separately?
Hi. If you had more than 10 years of railroad earnings, then you'll need to file separately for Railroad Retirement (RR) benefits. Social Security only uses RR earnings to calculate a person's Social Security retirement benefit rate if they don't have enough . . . Read More

Will My Wife's Spousal Benefit Be Reduced If She Starts Drawing Her Own Benefits Early?
I plan to wait to age 70 to begin Social Security. At that time my wife will reach her FRA as well and we plan to begin her Spousal benefit (50% of my FRA benefit) as well, which would be more than her retirement benefit. She is 62 and has credits for a small retirement benefit of her own which would be several hundred dollars a month if started now (with the early benefit penalty). If we were to start her benefits early, then begin spousal benefits when she reaches FRA would the Spousal benefit be reduced based on having started her work benefit early? While the benefit would . . . Read More

Do The Amounts Shown On The Social Security Beneift Statements Include The 8% Increase?
On the social security statement it tells you the projected amount of money you may be getting at retirement age .Does it include the eight percent on the statement. Are do thay add it when you start takings social security?
Hi. I'm not sure what type of increase you're referring to. Social Security benefit statements don't include any future projected cost of living (COLA) increases, but they do include the 8% increase that's added to a person's Social Security retirement benefit rate for each 12 month period that they delay taking benefits between their . . . Am I Eligible To Receive The $2400 Increase To Social Security?
I reached FRA in February currently not collect ssa am I eligible to receive the $2400 increase to ssa when I do decide to collect
Hi. I don't know what you're referring to by a "$2400 increase". There is no such across-the-board increase scheduled for Social Security benefits.
If you're asking whether or not you'll receive the cost of living (COLA) increase that will occur in January 2023, then the answer is yes. All people who reach age 62 no later than January 1 2023 will receive that increase in their Social Security retirement benefit rate . . . Read More

Will I Lose Out On The COLA If I Wait Until January To Start Collecting Benefits?
Hi, I was 65 in May 2022, I am planning to retire end of December 2022. Should I start collecting in November in order to receive any COLA they may give for January 2023 with all the inflation? If I wait until January will I lose out?
Hi. No, you will not lose out on the 2023 cost of living (COLA) increase no matter when you start drawing benefits. All Social Security COLAs that occur after a person reaches age 62 are added to their Social Security retirement benefit rate regardless of when they start drawing benefits.
Before you apply, you should . . . Read More

Do The Estimates On Social Security's Benefit Statements Include COLAs?
HI Larry,
I turned 62 in 2022. I think I understand that the PIA is now reasonably calculable, b/c AWI is in for 2020. However when looking at my estimated benefit on the my ss statement, does that estimate include any cola calculation or is it simple the "base" PIA? I do not think it would for this year since I believe the first time I would even be eligible for COLA will actually be next year (correct??) But do the ss benefit estimates provided to me going forward include COLAs or do I just have to wait until I begin benefits to get a "real" # which includes COLAs? I . . . Read More

Is My New Husband Responsible For Repaying My SSDI Overpayment?
Is my new husband responsible for SSDI overpayments, I incurred before marriage. SSDI has been making me pay for over 10 years
( husband's money, I don't work!), when I am STILL SICK. Husband refuses to pay, said it's not his bill, and I am still sick and was approved!
I was approved through a hearing by a judge. Who said it was approved and gave me start date. Approximately 4 months later received denial. Said doctors who told me to apply for ssdi, because I'm ill, all of a sudden said things that were negative about me, in order to deny my claim. Which means they . . . Read More
