Should I File For Spousal Benefits At Age 62?

Should I file for spousal benefits at 62 (I make less than my spouse)? My husband born 1959 and has not filed yet for SS and is still working.

thanks

Hi. First of all, you can't qualify for spousal benefits unless your spouse is collecting Social Security retirement or disability benefits. Nor could you apply for spousal benefits without also being required to apply for your own benefits at the same time. Only people who were born prior to January 2 1954 are allowed to apply for spousal benefits without being required to apply for their own . . . Read More

Hi. My expertise is limited to Social Security benefits, not income taxes. However, I do know that up to 85% of the amount of any Social Security benefits you receive can be taxed as income if . . . Read More

Shouldn't We Still Be Eligible For SNAP Benefits?

Hi! My 15 month old son with cerebral palsy receives monthly SSI benefits. We are a family of 5 and rely solely on my husband’s income. We are eligible for SNAP benefits, but at our recent re-evaluation they told us we were no longer approved due to our monthly income - my husband’s gross income of $2880 & my son’s SSI benefit of $894. There are two separate charts for being eligible - gross income standard and gross income standard for those over 60 or with a disability. Basically, they’re saying we’re not eligible for snap benefits anymore based on the gross income . . . Read More

Is It Worth It To Wait Until Age 70?

Is it worth waiting to age 70 for max SS monthly benefits if I have pretty much contributed the max during most all working years and continue to work FT as a professional?

Hi. It certainly could be worth it to wait, but each person much decide that for themselves. If you wait past full retirement age (FRA) to start drawing your Social Security retirement benefits, you earn delayed retirement credits (DRC). DRCs increase a person's benefit rate by 2/3rds of 1% for each month that they wait past FRA to start drawing. Depending on your year of birth, . . . Read More

What Was The Policy For Withdrawing A Social Security Application In 2002?

Currently when a client changes his mind about social security benefits he can complete form SSA-521 and pay back what he has received as long as it is done within the first year. What was the policy in 2002?

Hi. Prior to December 8 2010, there was no set time limit for withdrawing an application. And, the current one-year time limit for requesting withdrawal only applies to applications for Social Security retirement benefits. There still is no set time limit for withdrawing applications for other types of Social Security benefits (e.g. disability, . . . Read More

Will The Fact That I Was Penalized For Going Over The Earnings Limit Have An Affect On My Future Payment Amount?

I retired at 62 and was penalized several years for going over the SS income limit. I make payments even though I am 66 and 5 months. My question is, the 4 years SS was taken out of my check since I was 62 does that affect my future payment amount or any info that might help?

Hi. The short answer is yes, assuming that you were receiving Social Security retirement benefits. If a person claims Social Security retirement benefits prior to their full retirement age (FRA) and if some of their benefits are withheld due to the Social Security earnings test, then . . . How Can I Get My Widow's Benefits Started?

My husband passed away and I am trying to get my widows benefits started. I can't get into a locations in Fort Myers until March. I was planning to go to my sisters in Panama City to see if they could see me any sooner. I really need to get this taken care of so that I will have income.

Hi. I'm sorry for your loss. Due to COVID, Social Security offices have been closed to the public since March 2020. Since in 2021, Social Security did start making a limited number of in-office appointments for people with complex or dire-need problems, but I don't know . . . Read More

How Will My Wife's And Disabled Child's Benefits Be Calculated When I Apply For My Benefits?

I plan to take my SS at age 62 for the following reasons: my wife is two years younger than me and is permanently disable and is collecting SSDI. We also have an adult son who was permanently disable before age 22 and is collecting SSI and some of his benefits off my wives SS record. My question is when I retire how will they calculate my wife and sons checks off my record. I assume my wife is eligible because she is disabled, and she is taking care of an adult disabled child who was disabled before he turned 22. So, both those should allow her to claim the higher benefit prior . . . Read More

What Is My Next Best Step?

HI Larry,

I asked a related question earlier, repeated here.

When I applied for SSA benefits in September 2021 (for Jan 2022), the latest SSA statement at that time in September showed that I would receive $xxxx, if I waited until age 70. I reach 70 in January 2022. I just got a benefits verification letter (Dec 28, 2021) showing that I will receive $xxxx (the amount from the Sept 2021 statement) starting in Jan 2022, with no mention of the 5.9% COLA and no COLA notification letter. When I receive the first check in February 2022, will it be for $xxxx or for $xxxx . . . Read More
