Will My Pensions Be Considered

I am a 62 year old receiving widows benefits for two years. I’m able to receive a pension from Chrysler and K mart Headquarters when I reach 65. Will these pensions be considered income regarding the social security earnings test? I understand if I work I cannot make anything over $19,600.00 approx. My full retirement age is 66 years and 10 months. Second question...I grossed 15,0000.00 in 2020. I also received 10,000.00 in unemployment due to my place of work shut down due to the COVID pandemic for a few months. Do I owe social security anything for 2020? Thank you for looking . . . Will My Wife Automatically Start Getting Her Own Benefits At Age 70?

My wife filed and suspended her SS benefit at FRA and took a spousal benefit (mine). When she turns 70 in 2 months will she automatically begin to receive her own social security benefit or will she need to reapply for it. How does she go about switching from spousal to her own benefit. Thanks Carl

Hi Carl. If your wife had actually filed for and suspended her benefits at full retirement age (FRA), then Social Security would automatically reinstate payment of her benefits at age 70. But, your wife couldn't be drawing spousal benefits if she had actually . . . Read More

Can I Receive Social Security Benefits In Addition To My Railroad Widow's Pension?

I am receiving a windows pension from my deceased husband. I took his railroad pension because it was more than his S.S. I am now 62 can I receive my social security benefits also.

Hi. You can apply for Social Security (SS) benefits even if you're receiving Railroad Retirement (RR) benefits, but the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) will offset your Tier 1 RR benefits dollar for dollar by the amount of your SS benefit. Railroad Retirement (RR) is a 2-tiered program. Tier 1 RR benefits are intended as a substitute for Social Security benefits, so a person can' . . . Read More

Can I Receive Benefits For My Eight Year Old Twins If I'm On Disability Insurance?

Am I allowed to receive social security for my eight year old twins if I am on disability insurance??

Hi. Maybe, but it depends on your Social Security disability (SSDI) benefit rate. Children who are either under age 18, age 18 to 19 and attending high school, or older children who became disabled prior to age 22, can potentially qualify for child benefits on the record of a parent who is receiving either Social Security retirement or SSDI benefits.
But, Social Security uses a special formula for determining the family maximum benefit (FMB) amount . . . Read More

Can My Wife Receive 50% Of My Rate When I Apply Even If She's Younger Than Me?

My wife is 18 months younger than me. I am eligible for 100% benefits at age 66 and 2 months. Can she apply for and receive 50% of my rate when I apply or must she wait until she reaches her 100% rate later on?

Hi. Spousal benefits are reduced for age if the person receiving spousal benefits starts drawing them prior to their full retirement age (FRA). So, if you start drawing your benefits at FRA and if your wife starts drawing spousal benefits before she reaches FRA, she wouldn't get a full 50% of your benefit rate.

You don't mention whether or . . . Read More

Will I Lose My SSI Benefits?

I got a letter saying that I had been overpaid on my SSI BENEFITS, due to the fact that I sold my house and put the money in a savings account until I was able to buy another home with that money. I did use all of it to purchase another home, but it was in a savings account for a little over 6 months, until the purchase of my new home was finalized. Will I lose my SSI benefits? Will I have to pay Social Security back? I had no idea this was against the rules! What should I do?

Hi. It doesn't sound like you'd lose your Supplemental Security Income (SSI) . . . Read More

How Can I Get A Refund Of The Excess Medicare Premiums My Deceased Father Paid?

My father paid his 2nd quarter Medicare premium for 2020 but passed away in April 2020, so he had an amount due as a refund. I filed the correct paperwork in Sept 2020 with his local SS office and found out a refund was due for $288. SS says I have to contact Medicare and Medicare says I have to call SS. After calling SS, it turns out my dad filed for Medicare under my mother's name but he paid his own premiums (she is deceased). How do I go about collecting the refund that is due his estate?

Hi. If you die before full retirement age (FRA) without having applied for your benefits, your surviving spouse's unreduced benefit rate would be calculated based on 100% of your primary insurance amount (PIA). Your PIA is basically the Social . . . Read More
