Can I File For My Own Benefits Now And Then Switch To My Late Husband's Higher Full Rate At My FRA?

My 74-year-old husband passed away in December 2018. He had waited until age 70 to receive his Social Security benefits. A few months after his death, I turned 62 (last May). When I went to Social Security in Boston (where I successfully filed for survivor benefits for my son) I was encouraged to file for my husband's reduced benefits as a widow. When I asked whether I could take my substantially lower benefits at age 62 and switch to his higher benefits at my FRA, several people at Social Security told me several times that it was not possible to start with mine and switch to . . . How Do I Get Reimbursed From Social Security?

Hi Larry, my brother recently passed away, and I have legal custody of his two daughters. However the girls mother fraudulently filed for his death benefits, as well as their monthly benefits. I took custody of the girls 2 months after he passed away, and their mother, and her mother filed on the two girls behave. They continued receiving their benefits for a total of 5 months, four of which I had custody. The final court order indicates that their mother, and her mother owe us over $27,000 in Social Security benefits that they received, and shouldn’t have had. One they never . . . Read More

Why Am I Getting Less In My Social Security Check?

Why am I getting $306 less a month in my SS check. I am 72 years old

Hi,

I'm sorry, but I have no way of knowing why your payment amount changed. Social Security sends notices in the mail to inform people of the reason for any changes in their payment amounts, so if you didn't receive such a notice you'll probably want to contact Social Security to ask for an explanation.

How Long Can I Legally Put Off Filing For Disabled Adult Child's Benefits?

i have been on ssi since 2010 (aged 30). I was disabled prior to age 22, but did not know about SSI until that time. I successfully completed a cdr in 2017 and am still on SSI, and am now 40.

My father has applied for his retirements benefits, and I am being required by law to apply for DAC benefits on his record. I have not yet filed my application for DAC benefits, though I have an appointment coming up within a few weeks to begin the process.

I plan on getting married this fall. I will not be eligible for either SSI or any DAC benefits based on my future spouse . . . Read More

When Will My Wife Be Able To Apply For Spousal Benefits?

When will my wife be able to apply for spousal benefits? Or can she begin receiving them immediately?

Hi,

I'd need much more information to be able to give you a specific answer to your question. What I can tell you is that your wife would have to be at least age 62 to qualify for spousal benefits, unless she has an eligible child in her care who qualifies for child's benefits and who is either under age 16 or disabled. And, you would have to be drawing your Social Security retirement or disability benefits in order for your wife to potentially be . . . Read More

Are Social Security Recipients Going To Recieve An Additional $200 Monthly Under The Economic Package?

Under the economic package, are social security recipients going to receive an additional $200.00 monthly. This is in addition to the $1200.00 per person.

This was something that Warren has suggested.

Hi,

No, they aren't. The coronavirus relief act (H.R. 748) passed by congress does not include any changes to Social Security benefits.

How Much Can I Receive From My Husband's SSDI If He Dies?

My husband is on SSDI and in hospice for Prostate Cancer. He was born in April of 1956 and has been receiving SSDI for approx. 7 years. I am 61, born in June, 1958, and work full time making $53,941
He will most likely die before this year (2020) is over. I work because I carry both of us on health insurance.
My question to you is, how much can I receive from his SSDI once he dies? And for how long? Do I have a limit on what I can earn? If so, I can look at taking a lesser paying job. Currently, with Part A being the only thing on his SSDI, his check that goes into . . . Read More
