How Can I Stop A Social Security Office From Contacting People And Telling Them To File At Age 62?
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE I’m in need of your help, I need to know what to do to stop this travesty! In Detroit Michigan, the Social Security Administration CALLS PEOPLE AT THEIR HOMES prior to them reaching 62, and informs them that they need to come in and apply for SS Benefits. That in itself is cruel but when they come in SS signs them up to receive their spouses benefits which reduces their benefit amount more than if they had taken theirs at their reduced rate. How do I know this, I went down with my cousin to a social security office to ask why? 1. WHY are you are calling . . . Read More

Does A Child Who Is Now Age 18 Have Any Recourse If His Mother Didn't Save His Social Security Benefits For Him?
We have had a young man living with us since the death of his father. We are friends, not legal guardians. His father died when he was 16. He is now 18 and has asked his mother for his survivor benefits. She had never told him what his monthly payment was, but after he turned 18, he received his first check on his own for $986. When he asked his mother for the rest of his money, she claimed that there was only $3,000 of the roughly $24,000 that he should have had. She has not provided his support while he has been in our home for these 2 years, nor has he used or known he was . . . Read More

If I Start Drawing My Canadian Pension 5 Years Prior To Drawing My U.S. Social Security, Will The WEP Reduction Be Back Dated?
My question is regarding the scenario if I apply for my Canada pension when I am eligible at age 65 but wait to apply until 70 to apply for my US social security. My CPP is for a very small amount - annual approx. $1,600 I do not have enough substantial income to eliminate WEP on SS. Will the WEP for social security at 70 be calculated based on when I start receiving both pensions at the same time at age 70 or will it back date somehow to factor in the CPP benefits I received from ages 65 to 70?

Can I Collect Benefits For The Past Two Years That I Missed?
One of the four requirements for collecting social security based on your ex-spouse as stated on SSA’s website is: “The benefit you are entitled to receive based on your own work is less than the benefit you would receive based on your ex-spouse's work.” I called social security when I turned 62, but was told that my ex-spouse’s benefit was less than mine so therefore I could not collect any benefits.
SSA’s website does not state that the above requirement no longer applies when you reach full retirement age. I am now 68 and I recently learned that I could have been . . . Read More

Should My Wife Be Able To Apply For Spousal Benefits Online?
Hello,
I'm at FRA, born 3/12/53 and have filed for retirement benefits just in the last week. - March 29th.After running our options through your software, my wife, also at FRA (born 1/13/53) is planning to take restricted spousal benefits now as well. I just called SSA and was told that she couldn't do this online, she had to make an do it by phone (otherwise it will start her her full retirement benefits) and it could take a couple of months to get an appointment. In a previous SSA call (the person then seemed much sharper than this last person) I was told she could . . . Read More

Does My Husband Need To File For Benefits Or Will They Start Automatically?
My husband will be turning 70 this month. He is still working but plans to stop in the near future. In 2016 he filed and suspended, and I began spousal benefits at that time. I also will be turning 70 in July. Does he need to file for benefits beginning this month, or do his monthly Social Security benefits automatically begin on the day he turns 70? Any advice you may give us is greatly appreciated.
Hi,
If your husband already filed for and suspended his benefits they should start automatically effective with the month he reaches age 70, so if that's . . . Read More

Was Social Security Right To Deduct Money From My Check Because I Receive A UK Pension?
I recently applied for Social security and declared I was getting UK State Pension and immediately 475 dollars were deducted from my Social Security is this right?
Hi,
I can't tell you whether or not the amount of the reduction is correct without additional information, but it's probably right. If a person who files for U.S. Social Security disability or retirement benefits based on their own earnings also receives a pension based on their earnings that were exempt from Social Security taxes, a less generous benefit computation formula is used to . . . If A Person Dies On April 1st, Must Their Social Security Payment Received On April 10th Be Returned?
Person died April 1st payment is due April 10th do you have to return payment
Hi,
The payment would be due, but must be returned and reissued to the person eligible to receive it as an underpayment. A deceased person obviously can't endorse a check that arrives after their death, and the same principle still applies even when the payment is issued by direct deposit and no physical check is involved.
Social Security has a specific priority order for payment of an underpayment, and a preferred form to be used for claiming an underpayment. All . . . Read More
