Why Didn't I Get The 2022 COLA?

Why did I not get the $90 COLA for 2022

Hi. Without knowing your year of birth and the type of Social Security benefit(s) that you qualify for, I can't tell you whether or not you were eligible to receive a cost of living (COLA) increase. I can tell you that all people who turned age 62 on or before January 1 2022 should have had the 5.9% 2022 COLA added to their Social Security retirement benefit rate regardless of whether or not they were collecting benefits when the COLA occurred.

Is My Analysis Flawed?

Hi-I am curious to understand, a further question based on "Money Magic" page 72, how is that strategy beneficial long term? If husband claims early, we will permanently lock in a lower benefit, If I assign some hypothetical numbers, if the husband waits until 66 (assume FRA) and the wife until 70, collectively they will receive substantially more if they both live to 100, than if he had filed at 62 and she at 70. Thank you, is my analysis flawed?

Hi. No, your analysis isn't necessarily flawed. Whether or not the example you're referring to would be . . . Read More

Does This Seem Correct?

Hi-I am on a second round of "Get What's Yours" which I find very excellent, I am stuck on the Edith examples pgs 101 and 102. if her FRA at 66 is $1,800, it would be 25% reduced to $1,350 if claimed at 62. If she were t claim widowed benefit at 62 that would be 19% reduced at 62, from $2,000 to $1,620. Then on pg 102 you say that her $1,800 would increase to $3,168, which is true 76% increase from $1,800 at 62 to age 70. Does this mean that FRA for Edith was $2,400? Because, if she were to claim her own at 62 and that equals $1,800, it implies $2,400 at FRA. 25% reduction . . . Read More

Am I Able To Collect Survivor Benefits Even Though I Got My Wife's Life Insurance?

I just turned 60 years old , my wife passed away a few months ago, am I able to collect her survivors benefit even though I got her life insurance ?

Hi. I'm sorry for your loss. The fact that you collected your wife's life insurance wouldn't have anything to do with your eligibility for widower benefits. If your wife had enough Social Security credits to be insured for benefits, then you would probably be eligible to claim reduced widower benefits. However, if you're still working, then whether or not you could actually be paid widower benefits prior to . . . Read More

What Are My Daughter's Options For Finding Her Best Benefit?

Hi Larry,
My son-in-law passed away a year ago. He was 65 and was receiving SS disability. He was also receiving disability benefits through his former employer. My daughter is 53. Assuming she reaches age 60 and has not remarried, what are her options for finding her best benefit? I am pretty sure his lifetime earnings will have exceeded hers, even if she works another 17 years.
Thanks!

Hi. I'm sorry for your loss. In most cases, the best filing strategy for a widow such as your daughter is one of the following:

Will My Husband's Older Daughter's Benefit Be Redistributed To My Children When She Ages Out?

My husband passed away in May of last year. My two children, myself, and his daughter from a previous marriage all collect survivor benefits. I'm wondering if his daughter's benefit will be redistributed to my kids when she ages out and graduates (this is her senior year).

Hi. I'm sorry for your loss. Yes, it sounds like the older child's benefit amount will be redistributed to you and your children when she stops collecting benefits. Surviving children and a surviving spouse with an eligible child in care can each be paid up to 75% of the deceased worker . . . Read More

Since My Son Didn't Turn Age 18 Until August 24th, Will He Receive His Last Survivor Check In September?

My son turned 18 August 24, which means he was 17 almost the whole month so would he recieve his last survivors check in September?

Hi. No. Unless your son is still in high school or he's disabled, his child benefits will terminate effective with the month he reaches age 18. In other words, the last payment to which he'd then be entitled is the one for July that is paid in August (https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.04/handbook-0414.html).

Does It Make Sense For My Wife To Start Collecting At Age 69 Instead Of 70?

My wife turns 69 in June of 2023. Her expected SS benefit sheet shows a monthly benefit at age 69 of $3,944. If she waits to age 70 the monthly benefit iwould ncreases to $4,333. Given the anticipated 8 to 10% COLA adjustment to be released in Oct 2022 for 2023 SS benefits, does it make sense for her to retire at age 69 instead of of waiting until age 70 since inflation is expected to continue with higher than past year COLA adjustments, in effect allowing her to retire earlier but getting the same monthly payment benefit as if she waited to file at age 70?

How Can I Get Social Security To Honor My Court Order?

Hello! I had a NYS Court Order demanding my 'X' pay 65% of his benefits (or other funds he didn't want to disclose) when he turned 62 for over $430,000 owed to me for Child Support, only. It was to be paid out over a 15 year period from 2020 until 2035. We were almost 2 years unto the Agreement when he died, 12/29.21. In a month the SSA took away the $1,350 I fought for for 12 years saying, "We don't honor a NYS Court Order. We're Federal." My funds were cut & I got the difference in his higher amount -- a little over $200. I'm trying to live on $24,000+ a year but I com up . . . Read More
