Can I File For Spousal Benefits On My Husband's Record?

Can I file for spousal benefits on my husband’s benefits?
I’m 57, get retired military pension, not working now, don’t plan to work in future. I had planned to start my benefits at 62, then if my husband predecease me, I’d switch to his Benefits, since his benefits will be more then mine. I don’t reach retirement age till 67. I didn’t realize I could claim spousal benefits until I read your site.
My husband is 66, working now, also gets retired veteran pension. He plans to start Social Security pay this May 2020. Thank you for your time & advice.

Hi,

You couldn't qualify for spousal benefits at least until you reach age 62, unless you have an eligible child in your care who's either under age 16 or disabled. And unless you have an eligible child in care, you could never file just for spousal benefits without also being deemed to file for your own benefits at the same time. The result would be that you'd only be paid essentially the higher of the two benefit rates, and your rate would be reduced for age if you start drawing prior to full retirement age (FRA).

If your husband dies before you and before you start drawing benefits, you could file just for widow's benefits as early as age 60 and then file for your own benefits later. Or, you could file just for your own benefits as early as age 62 and then file for widow's benefits later. You and your husband may want to strongly consider using our software (https://maximizemysocialsecurity.com/purchase) to fully explore and compare your various options so that you can determine the best strategy for maximizing your benefits.

Best, Jerry
