My wife will begin collecting social security this July at age 62. I will reach FRA in March. Can I file for spousal benefits on wife?( while letting credits accumulate until 70) How is the spousal benefit calculated? ( we have comparable income history 60k/70k). Thank you
Hi,
Yes, you can file just for spousal benefits only effective with the first month that your wife becomes entitled to her benefits, and let your own benefit rate grow until age 70. You are still permitted to do this because you were born prior to January 2 1954, and are thus grandfathered under the new deeming law passed by Congress in 2015 (https://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/deemedfaq.html). Your spousal benefit amount will be 50% of your wife's full retirement age benefit rate (PIA).
Best, Jerry
