Can I Get Any Kind Of Support From Social Security?

I worked only one year and a half since I immigrated to USA, and I am now 72 years old
and have many medical issues and can not work any more .
I have a wife a nd a teen age girl. I am so worried about their future and also about my self. Can I have any kind of support from social security? Thank you sir

Hi. It doesn't sound like you'd qualify for any Social Security benefits based on your own earnings history. You might be able to qualify for benefits based on your spouse's earnings history, but only if she's drawing Social Security retirement or disability benefits based on her U.S. earnings history.

Otherwise, Social Security does administer a needs based program called Supplemental Security Income (SSI). U.S. citizens and legal immigrants can potentially qualify for SSI if they meet the income and resource limits for those benefits, and if they're either blind, disabled, or age 65 or older. For more information about the SSI program, refer to the following Social Security website: https://www.ssa.gov/ssi/.

Best, Jerry
