Ask Larry

Can I Make Voluntary Payments To Get Social Security Credits?

I was a California peace officer (retired) and got married to a woman not eligible for SS
I only paid 31quarters to SS is ther a way I can pay in retirement so to allow her to draw . I really don’t want to go back to work . I’m thinking like cash for ssquarters ?
Thanks mike

Hi Mike,

No, you can't make voluntarily payments in order to earn Social Security quarters of coverage (QC). The only way to attain QCs is by working for either wages or self-employment earnings (https://www.ssa.gov/OACT/COLA/QC.html).

Best, Jerry
