I started collecting my SS benefit at age 62 which was in 2015. My husband has just turned 66 and has filed for his SS benefit. He is currently working and is planning to continue until he's 70. From what I have read, he will get his full benefit because he is 66. My question is even though I am collecting my benefits, can I also collect on his? His has a much larger benefit than mine and financially could use the extra money. If so, will my benefit go back to my original lower amount when I turn 70?
Hi,
You could potentially be eligible for an additional spousal benefit if 50% of your husband's full retirement age rate (PIA) is higher than your own PIA (https://www.ssa.gov/OACT/quickcalc/spouse.html). If you are eligible for an additional spousal benefit, your spousal rate will be reduced if you start drawing your spousal benefits prior to full retirement age. And, if you are entitled to spousal benefits, they wouldn't stop when you reach age 70.
