My brother is collecting his SS. His wife will be 62 next year. Can she file to get her spouses until she reaches full retirement age and then change to her SS? Thanks!
Hi,
No, she can't. If your sister-in-law files for spousal benefits she'll be deemed to also be filing for her own Social Security retirement benefits at the same time. She'll then only be eligible for essentially the higher of the two benefit rates, and her benefit rate will be reduced for age if she starts drawing before her full retirement age.
Your sister-in-law may want to strongly consider using our software (https://maximizemysocialsecurity.com/purchase) to fully analyze her options in order to determine her best strategy for maximizing her benefits.
Best, Jerry
