I'm 77 started at 62 , collect $1670. My wife 76 worked 3yrs FT and 5yrs PT started at age 62 collects $711. Can she get more $ ?
Hi,
Probably not. If your wife only worked roughly 8 years in Social Security covered employment then it's unlikely that she would be insured for benefits on her own record. So, I assume what she's receiving is a spousal benefit from your record. The likely reason that she's apparently getting less than 50% of your benefit rate even though you both started drawing at age 62 is due to the fact that spousal benefits are reduced for age at a higher percentage rate than are retirement benefits payable based on a person's own work record.
Please note, though, that I'm just making an educated guess based on the very limited information furnished in your question. I have no way of knowing whether or not your benefit rates are correct. You and your wife may want to double check with Social Security to make sure that you are receiving all of the benefits for which you're eligible.
Best, Jerry
