Can My Wife Get Spousal Benefits?

my DOB 1/27/49 and began collecting SS 1/27/15 , my wife DOB 6/5/51 still working and NOT collecting. We have been told by SS that she can not get spousal benefits TWICE ,, is this correct ?? Is there anything else we can do to maximize our benefits ?

Thanks you

Hi,

Your wife can file a restricted application for just spousal benefits when she reaches age 66 (i.e. 6/2017). She can then switch to her own record at age 70 if it is higher than the spousal benefit. This strategy remains available to her because she was born prior to 1954, and was thus grandfathered under the new Social Security law passed in 2015.

That is one of many possible strategies for maximizing your benefits. You may wish to consider running the maximization software available on this website in order to determine your best possible strategy.

Best, Jerry
