I filed a restricted application at age 66 and have been getting spousal benefits on my wife's record (she filed at age 62). I will turn 70 next year. Do I need to apply to SS to switch to my own benefit at age 70, or is it automatic? If it is automatic, will they automatically switch my Medicare card number back to my SS number (It was changed to my spouse' SS number when I filed the restricted application).
Hi,
The switch from spousal to retirement benefits is NOT automatic, so you will need to file an application in order to switch to your own record at age 70. Your Medicare number will be changed to your own Social Security number when you switch to your retirement benefits.
