My father passed away in March and they stopped giving the money he gets from social security in April. Whatever he had left in his account was transferred into mine his account was under my name. Since he was unable to go to the bank due to his condition. I’m asking they deduct a reclamation of the same amount he got monthly. I wanna if that’s gonna be a monthly payment or that’s how much I will owe in general
Hi,
I'm sorry for your loss. I'm not sure I understand your situation. If your father died in March, then the only way you'd need to return any of his Social Security payments is if they were paid after March. If his payments were going to a joint account in your and your father's name and if the account number hasn't changed, then the bank should be able to return any incorrect payments from that account to the Treasury Department.
However, if the account where your father's benefits were being deposited has been closed and if you received the proceeds, then you'd be responsible for returning any of your father's benefits that may have been incorrectly paid after his death. You would need to make such a refund directly to Social Security, and they couldn't reclaim the benefits from your bank account.
Best, Jerry
