My wife is 4 years older than me. She does not work. If I decide to retire after turning 62 and take a reduced amount, and my wife is at her full retirement age of 66 yrs. 8 months, does she receive 50% of what my full retirement amount would be or does she receive 50% of the reduced retirement amount I will receive. We will be married over 10 yrs. at that time.
Hi,
If your wife is full retirement age or older when she becomes entitled to spousal benefits, she'll get 50% of your full retirement age benefit amount (PIA), even if your own benefits are reduced for age.
Also, you only need to be married for 1 year or more to become eligible for spousal benefits. The 10 year marriage requirement applies to divorced spousal benefits.
Best, Jerry
