Should I Wait Until My Husband Files So I Can Collect Spousal Benefits?

My husband will be 62 six months after me. Should I wait and when he files, I can collect on his spousal benefits? It would be around $50 more a month. Also, if I do, can I file on my social security at 67?

Hi. People born after January 1 1954 aren't allowed to apply just for spousal benefits without also being required to apply for their own benefits. So, you couldn't file just for spousal benefits while waiting until later to claim your own benefits.

You could file for your own benefits as early as age 62 and then file for an excess spousal benefit when your husband applies for his benefits, but both benefits will be reduced for age if you start drawing them prior to your full retirement age (FRA). And, the earlier you start drawing, the lower your rate will be. It sounds like you and your husband should strongly consider using our software (https://maximizemysocialsecurity.com/purchase) to fully analyze all of your options so that you can determine the best overall strategy for maximizing your benefits.

Best, Jerry
