Will My SSI Be Affected From The Sale Of My Home?

Will SSI be affected from the sale of my home? How soon do I need to reinvest that money?

Hi. If you receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), then yes, selling your home could affect your eligibility for benefits. You must have no more than $2000 in countable assets to potentially qualify for SSI benefits. The value of a home in which you live is excluded from counting as an asset, but the proceeds you receive from selling your home count toward the SSI asset limit unless you use the proceeds to buy a new home in which to live within 3 months (https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0501130110).

Just to clarify for other readers, the answer above only applies to Supplemental Security Income benefits. Selling your home has no effect on Social Security benefits.

Best, Jerry
