Larry,
My wife is 69 and is collecting her SS. I will be 66 this July. I am still working full time and will continue to work until at least 68. I plan to file a restricted application for spousal benefits only as discussed in your book. Should I wait until my 66th birthday before I file the restricted application for my spousal benefits? I do not want SS to deem that I am filing for my SS benefits.
Hi,
You can apply up to 4 months prior to the month you will reach age 66. You don't need to file that far in advance, but that's the soonest you can file and still be able to restrict your application to spousal benefits only. Just be sure to choose the month you turn age 66 as your month of election to begin benefits, and to restrict your application to spousal benefits only.
Best, Jerry
