I have an adult handicap child. My husband passed away 6 years ago. I have to stop work to care for her full time. Can I draw widow benfits since I won't be able to Work? I'm 54 years old. My adult handicapped child is 30.
Hi,
I'm sorry for your loss.
You can potentially qualify for mother's benefits if you have a disabled adult child in your care who qualifies for benefits on your husband's record. Mother's and father's benefits are similar to widow(er) benefits, but there is no minimum age requirement for mother's & father's benefits. For the specific requirements involved, refer to Social Security's handbook: https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.04/handbook-0415.html.
Best, Jerry
