I did as you suggested and went to the local Social Security office to have a commutation of my benefits.My last years income was my second highest income. I brought proof of incothat isn't their job.me and identification. After waiting about three and a half hours and seeing the screener twice I finally got to see someone. She looked at my income on the screen and said yes it is one of my higher incomes. She told me that she is unable to recalculate my benefits it is done by another office. I asked her why couldn't the screener have told me this3 1/2 hours ago. She didn't provide much of an answer other than that isn't their job.

Apparently the representative you spoke with did a poor job of explaining the benefit recomputation process to you (https://secure.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0300605570). What she was referring to by another office is a regional processing center. Social Security has 8 of those around the country, and they have responsibility for the final processing of most benefit recalculations.

Assuming that she did her job properly, the person you spoke with made a record of your request and a copy of your earnings evidence. She should then complete her part of recomputation process and forward the information on to the regional processing center to adjust the amount of your payments and issue you a notice.
