Hi! I am 43 years old and my husband is 69. We have two kids under the age of 18. If my husband passes, what social security benefit would I receive? How much would I receive? If I collect now ,will that affect how much I would receive at my full retirement age. Thank you.
Hi,
You would need to have a child in care under age 16 or disabled in order to be eligible for spousal benefits at your current age, but if you do receive spousal benefits it would have no effect on your future benefit rate.
If your husband dies, you wouldn't be eligible for any benefits currently unless you have a child of his who is under age 16 or disabled in your care. You could first be eligible for regular widow's benefits at age 60, or at age 50 if you are disabled. Full widow's benefits are generally equal to the deceased worker's full benefit rate, however, your widow's rate will be reduced for age if you start drawing them prior to your full retirement age.
Best, Jerry
