Can My Daughter Claim Her Social Security At Age 55?

Looking for info for daughter who is 55 unable to work but was turned down for disability. I'm wondering is she could claim her Social Security at age 55?

Hi,

No, unless your daughter qualifies for disability benefits (SSDI) the soonest that she could get benefits based on her own work record would be age 62, And, her benefit rate would be reduced for age she takes her retirement benefits prior to her full retirement age of 67.

You don't mention anything about your daughter's marital history so I don't know if she might qualify for any other types of benefits. About the only type of non-disability related benefit that she could qualify for now, though, would be some type of child in care spousal or survivor benefit.

Your daughter may also want to consider filing an appeal on her claim if she was recently disallowed (https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10041.pdf) or reapplying for SSDI benefits. A relatively high percentage of SSDI claims that are initially turned down end up being approved during the appeals process.

Best, Jerry
