Hi,
If a person who is under full retirement age (FRA) and drawing Social Security earns too much, it can result in a full or partial offset of their benefits. In 2018, people who won't reach their FRA before the end of the year are permitted to earn up to $17,040 without losing any of their benefits. But, for each $2 that they earn in excess of that amount they'd lose $1 of benefits. That could result in the loss of all of their benefits depending on how much they earn.
If the person is receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which is a needs based program administered by Social Security, their SSI payments could be reduced if they earn more than $65 per month (https://www.ssa.gov/ssi/spotlights/spot-reporting-earnings.htm).
If a person lies to Social Security or withholds material information in order to receive benefits for which they are not entitled, they could be charged with fraud.
Best, Jerry
