Could My Husband Get Half Of My Benefit If I File Now And Could He Then File On His Own Record At Age 68?

i am 66. my husband is 67. we've not filed for SS yet. My SS would be about 1000 right now. my husband's would be about 1600. Can I start collecting now and then my husband could get 1/2 of my 1000 and then he could wait to file his own when he is 68?

Hi,

Yes, if you file now your husband could potentially get a spousal benefit equal to 50% of your full retirement age rate (PIA). He could then switch to his own record at any time, but it would probably be better for him to wait until age 70 to switch to his own record. That's when his retirement benefit amount would reach it's highest possible rate, and that higher rate would also apply when calculating your widow's benefit rate if your husband dies first.

Before filing, you and your husband should strongly consider using our maximization software in order to compare all of your options in order to determine the filing strategy that would be best for both of you in the long run.

Best, Jerry
