Do ESB calculations apply when filing a Restricted Application for Spousal Benefit? I am approaching 66 (my wife is 2 years older and no longer working). I still work and make significantly more than my wife did. I would like to file a restricted application and wait until 70 to file for full benefits. Will I get 50% of my wife's FRA or will it be subject to the ESB calculation?
Hi,
I'm sorry, but I don't know what you're referring to by 'ESB calculations'. In any case, if you file a restricted application for spousal benefits only at your full retirement age (FRA) or later, you would receive a spousal benefit rate equal to 50% of your wife's full retirement age rate (i.e. PIA, or primary insurance amount). In order for you to be eligible for spousal benefits, though, your wife must be drawing her benefits.
It sounds like you and your wife should strongly consider using our maximization software to explore and compare your filing options so that you can choose the best possible strategy for claiming your benefits.
Best, Jerry
