My husband passed 7 years ago, I am just now at 62 going to collect his SS, Am I entitled to retroactive SS?
Hi,
I'm sorry for your loss.
No, you almost certainly couldn't claim benefits any earlier than the month in which you file your application. Although widow's benefits can be payable as early as age 60, you normally can't claim benefits any earlier than the month in which you file your application. Typically, you can only claim retroactive widow's benefits if you apply after the month you reach full retirement age (FRA), or if your spouse received reduced retirement benefits prior to their death and your benefit rate wouldn't be further reduced if you started drawing widow's benefits effective with an earlier month. If you're just now turning age 62, though, neither of those exceptions would apply in your case.
Before you start drawing, you should strongly consider using our maximization software to make sure that you choose the best possible strategy for claiming your benefits.
Best, Jerry
