I am on long term disability as well as Social Security Disability. My social security disability is offset to my long term disability. I will be at my full retirement age on 09/21. I am approved for my long term disability thru 2/22. When my Social Security Disability converts to my Social Security at full retirement in 9/21 will my social security still be an offset for my long term disability? Thank you.
Hi,
Your Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits would not be offset due to a private long term disability (LTD) benefit unless the LTD is Worker's Compensation (WC) from a workplace injury, or a public disability benefit (PDB) based on your earnings from an employer where you didn't pay Social Security taxes. If you are receiving WC or a PDB, any resulting offset applicable to your Social Security benefits would end when your SSDI converts to regular Social Security retirement benefits when you reach full retirement age (FRA).
On the other hand, if your LTD is currently being offset due to receipt of SSDI benefits, then whether or not that offset would end when you reach FRA would depend on the terms of your LTD policy.
Best, Jerry
