Which Month Should I Choose To Start My Benefits In Order To Get The Maximum Retroactivity?

Confusion about spousal benefits -- My husband is getting his retirement benefit. I reached FRA (66) on June 16 and still qualify for a restricted application for spousal benefit only. I am filing this week in Sept. I want to get the maximum retroactive benefit without having time applied prior to my birthday in order to insure that I get the maximum spousal benefit (1/2 of my husband's benefit). I will take my retirement benefit at 70. Social security employee #1 told me to request three months of retroactive benefits "as social security does not count the month my application is made." Worker #2 said to request four months (June, July August and Sept.) Which answer is correct to cover the months with having retroactive time applied earlier than my birthday on 6/16/19?

Hi,

When you file your restricted claim for spousal benefits, if you were born on June 16 1953 you'll want to choose June as your month of election to start your benefits. Social Security pays benefits a month behind, though, so if you receive your first payment in September the payment would cover your benefits for June, July & August.

It sounds like your plan is sound, but you may want to consider using our software (https://maximizemysocialsecurity.com/purchase) to be sure.

Best, Jerry
