Am I Eligible For Spousal Benefits Between When My Wife Starts Drawing And When My Own Benefits Start?

My wife filed an application for Social Security in February to take effect when she turns 70 in May. Her application is in pending status. I will be 70 in July and am ready to file an application. Am I eligible for spouse's benefits from May, when my wife's benefits begin and July when my own benefits will start. If so, will my Social Security benefit automatically switch from spouse's benefit to my own when I reach 70?

Hi,

Yes, assuming that you haven't already filed for and suspended your benefits and since you were born prior to January 2 1954, you could file a restricted application for spousal benefits to start effective with the first month that your wife claims her Social Security retirement benefits. You could then continue to draw those benefits until you switch to your own benefits.

You would not automatically be switched from drawing spousal benefits to drawing your own benefits, though. You would need to file separate applications for spousal benefits and for your own Social Security retirement benefits.

It sounds like you and your wife should strongly consider using our software (https://maximizemysocialsecurity.com/purchase) to compare your various filing options so that you can be sure to choose the best possible strategy for maximizing your benefits.

Best, Jerry
