I was told by the Social Security Office today that if I request ex-spouse survival benefits, I would have to be re-qualifed for SSD which I have been receiving for over 5 years because I am not 60 & that I could possibly lose my disability status & SSDI... Is this true?
Hi. Theoretically, Social Security could do a medical review of your disability status at any time, so filing for disabled survivor benefits wouldn't make you any more vulnerable to losing your disability status. In many cases if someone is drawing Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits and they subsequently apply for disabled survivor benefits, Social Security simply adopts the prior medical approval for the new claim. I don't know whether or not that would happen in your case, though, because it would depend on when your disability began and when your ex-spouse died.
