I paid my Medicare premium in December for 5 months ( nov 2020 - march 2021) prior to retiring. I then began receiving my Social Security checks when I retired in January 2021. Medicare premiums were deducted even though I had prepaid. I was told I have an overpayment of $511.00 which will be reimbursed to me. My questions is, how long does this take? No one at Medicare or Social Security could tell me. I've been waiting since January! Is there something I can do besides keep calling them? Are they that far behind with reimbursing people?

Hi. During the time that I worked for Social Security, duplicate Medicare Part B premiums were almost always refunded within 60 days. However, you aren't the first person who has recently indicated that they're having problems getting a refund. The refund process requires coordination between the Medicare and Social Security agencies, and I don't know if COVID has somehow gummed up the works.

In any case, the only alternative to following up with Social Security that I can suggest is to contact the offices of either your U.S. congressperson or one of your U.S. senators to let them know about the problem that you're experiencing. Oftentimes, an inquiry to Social Security from a member of congress can expedite the resolution of a problem.
