Hi, what are the new rules regarding file and suspend; and taking 50% of spouses SS? if higher earner takes SS at age 70, can lower earner take 50% of that "spousal" amount at age 66? And then when lower earner turns 70, change to take their own amount? Also, if lower earner takes SS at 50% of higher earners amount, does that reduce the higher earners SS? Thanks, Craig
Craig, when someone files for their spousal benefit, they are not 'taking' any of the other spouse's benefit — they are filing for their own spousal benefit which is based on the other spouse's record but does not decrease the other spouse's retirement benefit. If someone files for their spousal benefit at full retirement age (FRA), their spousal benefit is equal to 50% of the other spouse's retirement benefit at their FRA, not either their increased benefit if taken at 70 or their decreased benefit if taken at 62. Those born on or before January 1 1954 can restrict their application to just their spousal benefit at FRA and then file for their increased retirement benefit at 70. Those born on or after January 2 1954 cannot restrict their application to just their spousal benefit. Thanks, John
