What if you create and sell NFTs would the monies generated by that be considered income by social security?
Hi. My expertise is limited to Social Security benefits, not income tax laws. All I can tell you is that if you create a non-fungible token (NFT) and if you make a profit from doing so, although Social Security would consider it as income it would only count for purposes of the Social Security earnings test if you are required to report the income as self-employment earnings. Only wages and self-employment earnings are classified as earned income for earnings test purposes. However, if someone is receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI), then any type of earned or unearned income they receive could affect their SSI payments.
There appears to be some question among tax experts as to whether or not such income is subject to self-employment taxes, so I would suggest contacting the IRS to find out what their position is.
Best, Jerry
