So, if your ex-husband is deceased and if you would be potentially eligible for benefits on your ex's Social Security record, then Social Security should be able to tell you if your ex-spouse is deceased.

However, if your ex-husband is still living, then the Privacy Act would bar Social Security from releasing much information to you. And, besides that, Social Security would likely only know your ex's whereabouts is he's receiving benefits.
