I will be 66 on Jan 23rd 2017. My wife started receiving social security on her record in 2008. Should I claim a spousal benefit when I turn 66. My concern is that if I claim a spousal benefit against her record when I reach 66, I will be unable to make a claim on my record (which is much higher) when I finally cease working. I've heard both sides of this from different experts.
Hi,
Yes, it certainly sounds like you should file a restricted application for spousal benefits only effective with January 2017. Drawing spousal benefits will have no adverse affect on your own future benefit rate. In all likelihood, your best strategy would be to draw the spousal benefits for 4 years, and then switch to your own record at age 70.
Best, Jerry
