My husband started collecting SS at age 62 when he retired. He passed away at age 70 and 11 days.I will be 65 in Dec.and plan to collect on his SS or would it be better to collect on mine?
deb,
It depends on whether your retirement benefit off of your own record is smaller or larger than your widow's benefit. Since your husband took his retirement benefit early your widow's benefit is limited to 82.5% of his full retirement age benefit. It may be best to take your widow's benefit now and let your retirement benefit grow until age 70. MaximizeMySocialSecurity can determine your best filing strategy, i.e. when, and if, you should take either benefit.
Best,
Mike
