My wife is currently 64 1/2. She has been on Social Security disability for eight years. I am currently 59 years nine months old. My question is should my wife suspend at 66, FRA, and collect spousal benefits? She is currently grossing approximately $1025 a month. Half of my full retirement benefits would be approximately $2800- 50% equals $1400 a month. I think she could then collect a $1400 a month spousal benefit. I plan to file and suspend at 66 years and eight months old which is my FRA. Then wait until 70 to collect maximum Social Security benefits. Any thoughts or input on our situation? Ed
Hi Ed,
Your wife can't draw spousal benefits if she suspends her own benefits at full retirement age (FRA). For one thing, you would have to be drawing your benefits in order for your wife to be eligible for spousal benefits, plus the amendments passed by Congress in 2015 specifically preclude people from receiving other types of benefits while their own benefits are in suspense (https://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/suspendfaq.html).
Based on your comparative benefit rates, it sounds like your wife wouldn't benefit by suspending her benefits at FRA. When you should start drawing your benefits is more of an open question, and depends largely on your personal preferences. You should strongly consider using our maximization software to compare your filing options and determine the best overall strategy for you and your wife.
