Where Can I Have My SS Checks Deposited So The Government Can't Touch Them?

Where can I have my SS checks deposited (or direct deposited) so the government can't touch them?

Hi,

Social Security payments can be directly deposited to an account in your name at a bank, savings & loan, credit union, or thrift institution (https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0202402030). My expertise is limited to Social Security benefits, though, so I'm unable to answer the other part of your question.

What Can I Do?

I am living in a housing complex with 4 children. Three of my children where on ssi and ssdi until they went to work. My where taken off of ssdi because they are working, and they where only receiving ssii off of my ex-husband. My ex-husband passed away a few weeks ago, and I was not aware they were entitled to his money, so which leaves me over income in housing and the only way for me to live here is that one of my children has to quit there job which I don't think it's right. They just finally got a job which is very hard to do especially when you have a disability.

How Do We Report An Address Change?

My husband and I came to Florida & stayed because COVID hit. We’ve decided to homestead here and I’m unable to figure out how to change our mailing address. Can you help?

Hi,

I assume you're referring to changing your address for Social Security purposes. If you sign up for an online account, you should be able to change your address on Social Security's website: https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/change-of-address.html. Otherwise, you'll have to call them at 1-800-772-1213.

Is This Normal?

Hi, I'm writing you because my father passed on November 28, 2020. He was in assisted living and had a payee to take care of his funds. He had a saving account under the payees name which he received from Social Security. The Payee claims that everything that was in the saving account was sent back to Social Security. My mom contacted Social Security with the understanding that she would be entitled to the money he had left in the bank. Social Security informed her that they have nothing to do with his savings account before his death.

How Do I Find Out From SSA If My Ex-Wife Dies?

I'm certain that my ex-wife's daughters will not notify me when she dies. How do I find out from the SSA that she's passed? (e.g. what forms, fees etc)

Hi,

Even if Social Security knows that a person is deceased, they can't release that information unless it's required as part of their operations. For example, if you apply for survivor benefits then Social Security would be required to inform you whether or not you qualify for benefits.

Is There Anything That My Fiancée Will Qualify For If We Marry?

I am a widower. 7 yrs now. My daughter draws SSA off my late wife’s work and I draw 4 months a year because of my income. I met someone who is a disabled adult child who is drawing off her fathers work record. We are getting married. She receives SSDI and Social security. When we get married I understand I will lose what I draw from my late wife. I also understand that my fiancé will lose her SSDI. But she is still disabled. Is there anything she would qualify for? Would she be able to keep her Medicare and Medicaid? Will she have to apply for disability all over again?

Does Receiving A QPP Pension Qualify As Canadian Sourced Income?

I understand that a charitable donation to a charity in Canada is tax deductible on the U.S. 1040 tax return if there is any Canadian sourced income. Does receiving a QPP pension qualify as Canadian sourced income? The QPP income gets lumped in with U.S. Social Security income so not sure if it is identified on the form.

Hi,

I'm sorry, but I'm unable to answer your question. My expertise is limited to Social Security benefits, not tax regulations.
