Widow's Benefits

Should The Fact That I Started A Business Have An Effect On What I Can Receive From My Husband's Record?

I'm 75 and my husband recently passed away. I'd been drawing off of him for years. I thought when he died I would get what he was getting in benefits and my benefits would go away. I recently started a small business, its had no income, nothings been reported on my tax return. The SS office has told me that because I started a business I will not get the amount of his benefits. Is this true?

Hi,

I'm sorry for your loss.

How Much Would My Wife Receive If I Died Now?

Two questions.
1. I have been on Soc Sec disability since I was 53 and am currently 63. My wife started drawing her soc sec last year when she turned 63. She receives $580 a month on hers and $ 340 a month additional due to my Soc Sec which is about $2000. if I died now(God forbid) what would she receive? Also will it increase for her as I age I.E. will she receive more if I survive longer?

Is There Anything I Need To Do To Make Sure That I'll Receive My Late Husband's Full PIA?

Hi Larry,

I would like so send you a big thank you, for all that you and your colleagues are doing to help us get what is ours.

I am concerned about my recent social security application and hoping you can tell me if I have any cause to be concerned or if there is anything I need to do to make sure I will receive my late husband's full PIA?

Can I Get Social Security Widow's Benefits?

I'm 62 years old and work full time and make 30,000 a year my husband past away 5 years ago can I get widow benefits from social security
Thanks Sharon

Hi Sharon,

I'm sorry for your loss.

You may be able to receive some widow's benefits, but Social Security would withhold $1 of your benefits for each $2 that your earnings exceed $17,040 this year (https://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/whileworking.html).

Is There Any Way That My Recuced Widow's Benefit Rate Could Be Increased To The Full Rate?

Is there any way that the reduced amount of what I receive from my husbands social security as his widow, ever be increased to 100 percent of what he was receiving when he died, at any time. I started receiving it at 60 and am now 71.. I worked for many many years myself.

How Would My Wife's Widow's Benefits Be Calculated If I Die Before She Reaches FRA?

I'm currently receiving full social security retirement benefits. My wife turns 63 next month, and we are considering filing for early spousal benefits at age 63 and 2 months. I understand how the reduction in spousal benefits works for taking early benefits, and know how to calculate the reduction. It's my understanding that if I die during the three years before she reaches full retirement age, her widow's benefit will be permanently reduced, but if I die after she reaches FRA she will receive 100% of my benefit.

How Much Would My Wife Get If I Die After Starting My Retirement Benefits At Age 70?

My wife is turning 64 later this month and I will be 66 in June. We have been advised for her to file now and for me to file restricted and then collect my larger benefit at age 70. It is my understanding that if I pass after age 70, my wife would receive that larger amount as the survivor benefit. However, the SSA office told me that is not the case, she would only be entitled to my FRA age 66 benefit. Is that correct? If so, should my strategy be different?

Can I Get My Deceased Husband's Benefits When He Would Have Been Age 62?

Can I get my deceased husbands benefits when he would have been 62

Hi,

When you could qualify for widow's benefits depends on your age, not your husband's. Widow's benefits can be paid at a reduced rate as early as age 60, or age 50 for disabled widow's. For full list of the requirements for widow's benefits, refer to Social Security's handbook: https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.04/handbook-0401.html.
