I was born in 1955 and am now at full retirement age. My wife will be at full retirement age in exactly one year. Is there any benefit for me to receive spousal benefits now. Would I then convert to my own benefits in one year when she receives SS benefits.
Hi. You can't be paid spousal benefits at least until your spouse starts drawing their Social Security retirement or disability (SSDI) benefits. And, even then, you'll only be able to qualify for spousal benefits if your wife's primary insurance amount (PIA) is more than twice as much as your own PIA. People born after January 1st 1954 are not allowed to claim spousal benefits while waiting until later to claim their own benefits.
It sounds like you and your wife may want to strongly consider using our software (https://maximizemysocialsecurity.com/purchase) to fully analyze all of your options so that you can determine your best strategy for maximizing your benefits.
