My friend wanted me to ask what does he have to do, he retired last year and he owed some child support, they are taken ng over half of his check, his ex wife gave falls information about his children, one went to prison when he was 17, one went into military, he is having to pay on them til they become age. He was charged til 21. He does not get enough money to even hire an attorney, and he cannot get an legal aid attorney
Hi,
I'm sorry but I'm not a lawyer and don't know of any advice to give your friend. If his Social Security benefits are being garnished for child support as the result of a court order, Social Security must follow the court's order. Therefore, it sounds like he'd need to try to get the court order changed, but I have no idea how he'd go about doing that.
Best, Jerry
