What Are My Filing Options?

Am 62, primary income earner. Spouse has been receiving Social Security Disability for 20 years. I am considering applying for early benefits. What are my options?

Sherry,
Your best strategy depends on the relative amount of your retirement benefit compared to your spouse's disability benefit. If you file for either your retirement or spouse's benefit before your full retirement age, then you will be deemed by law to have applied for both benefits at that time. While this would enable your spouse to switch to spousal benefits off of your record, if they are higher than his disability benefit, it would also mean that you benefit would be reduced. If you delay your retirement benefit until age 70, then it would be increased by 32%, but you spouse couldn't switch to spousal benefits until you are 70. You can use our software, MaximizeMySocialSecurity, to determine your best strategy.
Best,
Mike
