What Do You Believe Is The Best Strategy For Us?

Hello,
I will be turning 66 in February of 2019 and my wife, who is on disability, will be turning 62 in October of 2018. We are looking to maximize our SSA benefits. Currently, according to the SSA website, my benefit would be $2185 at full retirement age or at age 70 it would be $2903. My wife's Social Security Disability is currently $1456 and we assume that will remain the same. After reading a couple of your articles about maximizing Social Security benefits, we would like to know what you believe the best strategy would be for us. Thank you very much for any help you can give, eagerly awaiting your reply.

Hi,

It sounds as though your likely best strategy would be to file a restricted application for spousal benefits only at age 66 and then switch to your own record at age 70. I can't say for sure, though, since it will ultimately depend on how long you and your wife live. You may want to strongly consider using our maximization software in order to compare all of your options and determine what you believe is your optimal strategy.

Best, Jerry
