What Happens When I Turn 62?

Hi Larry,
I just turned 60. I've been on a combination of SSDI/SSI for a long time due to disability. I get $275 SSI because my $679 SSDI payment alone is below the limit. I also get Medicare AND Medi-Cal (I'm in California). What happens when I turn 62? What about when I reach full retirement age? What if I got married or went into a domestic partnership?

Hi,

Nothing will necessarily change when you turn 62, and nothing significant will change when you reach full retirement age (FRA) other than your Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits will convert to regular Social Security retirement at that time. That won't change your benefit rate, though, so it shouldn't alter your SSI rate or your Medicare/MediCal eligibility.

Getting married or entering a domestic partnership would have no adverse effect on your SSDI or Medicare, but could potentially affect your SSI and MediCal eligibility since those programs are needs based.

Best, Jerry
