I have SSI and my crypto asset is about to hit $2000. I'm told because i benefit from SSI i cannot pass the $2000 threshold. What will happen if I do? Will they take it away immediately and make me pay back? What should I do?
Hi. Your countable assets do need to be no more than $2000 in order for you to be able to qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments. Social Security would need to suspend your payments if and when the value of your countable assets exceed that amount. However, you would not have to repay the SSI payments you received for months when you were still eligible.
If the value of your assets does exceed $2000 you should report that fact to Social Security. If you go over the asset limit and if you continue to receive SSI payments you'll get overpaid and you'll be expected to repay the overpayment.
Best, Jerry
